Day five of five · the weekly verdict tonight

We called the break and the reason — and the close landed $5 below our lowest box

Gold closed Thursday at $4,024.82, down $116 (−2.8%) in one session, the lowest close since August, erasing all of its gains since the summer. We ranked the break first and wrote the reason (Brent above $112), and the reason came true: Brent closed at $113.17. But the close landed $5 below the floor of our lowest box ($4,030). Right direction, right reason, wrong size — and in grading that is wrong, not “nearly right”. This morning the ounce is at $4,025 (it touched $3,986 overnight and came back to exactly Thursday’s close), and the week is down 3.4%. And the gram? Flat at EGP 6,290 — because the trade dollar jumped to 55.55 and absorbed the ounce’s fall in pounds. And the bank dollar is 55.30 today (Souq El Dahab, 11:45 AM). Tonight at midnight, the verdict on the weekly call; tomorrow, the full table.

❌ Wrong range — the close was $5 below the lowest box · direction and reason right

Grading Thursday — we said break, and it was a break… bigger than the one we drew

We published: 45% the break is confirmed, the liquidity chain ($4,030–$4,080), 35% oil calms and gold climbs back above $4,080 ($4,080–$4,130), 25% the fear chain finally runs ($4,130–$4,180). The close was $4,024.82 — $5 below the floor of the first box. Wrong range.

The first box’s confirming number was “the S&P 500 at 7,600 or below, or Brent at $112 or above”. Brent closed at $113.17 (+4.0%, the highest close since May) after Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. The S&P closed at 7,663 (−1.2%), not at 7,600. So the condition was met on the oil side. Right reason, right direction — but the price went through the whole box.

Why does that count as wrong? Because the rule is clear: the close has to sit inside a published box. If we made an exception for “it was close” today, we would make it every day and the record would mean nothing. $4,024 is not inside $4,030–$4,080, full stop.

But the real lesson is about size. We put the lowest box $50 under the price (−1.3%), and the day fell $116 (−2.8%). On the liquidity chain, moves run at twice the usual size. The 10-year yield fell 19 basis points to 4.955% and gold fell with it — the exact signature we wrote in the morning (yield down and gold down equals liquidity), just at a size we did not forecast. This goes into Saturday’s table as a proposed correction: on liquidity days, the first box widens.

Record: 48 published · 45 graded · 41 correct · 91% (the weekly call and today’s are still open). The first fall in the rate in two weeks. Thursday’s report → · How grading works →

📍 Day 5 of 5 — tonight’s map: the verdict on the weekly call

The weekly call was written last Saturday: 40% the cap holds ($4,080–$4,200) · 35% a break above $4,200 (condition: Brent above $108) · 25% a break below $4,080 (condition: the yield at 5.22% or above). The ounce is now $4,025 — $55 below the first box’s floor, with the week at −3.4%. So if the close stays below $4,080 tonight, the third scenario is what happened… but without its number: we said the yield at 5.22 or above, and the yield went the opposite way, to 4.96. By our rule: right by luck, and the reason we wrote (the rate chain) was wrong — what broke gold was the liquidity chain. That is exactly what tomorrow’s weekly table will say, plainly.

What changes the verdict tonight? A close above $4,080 puts the week back in the first box — it needs +1.4% in one session, which has happened once this month. A close above $4,200 is remote (+4.3%). The verdict is at midnight Cairo time; tomorrow morning: the full weekly table (five days × range, order, number) plus next week’s call, with the dollar inside it.

18K, per gram, we sellEGP 5,391unchanged

➡️ 21K flat at EGP 6,290 — from today’s counter reset (11:29 AM, with the ounce at $4,025). The ounce fell $60 from yesterday’s reset (worth about −92 pounds on the gram) and the trade dollar rose 0.82 (worth about +93 pounds). Net zero. Global gold fell 2.8% and your gram did not move — the clearest example this week of the two engines. The official price is at today’s prices. 💱 The implied trade dollar is 55.55 — the biggest daily jump since we started tracking it. And the market says the same: the bank-dollar average is 55.30 and the market trade dollar 55.63 (the Souq El Dahab app, today 11:45 AM) — the banks from 55.14 yesterday to 55.30 today, with the trade and the banks close together (a premium of about 0.6%). The market’s indicative 21K average: buy 6,265, sell 6,305. 📉 The whole week (from Friday’s close of $4,166): the ounce is down 3.4%, the trade dollar up from 53.32 to 55.55 (+4.2%), and the gram up 0.6% (from 6,250 to 6,290). The worst week for the ounce in months, and the gram in Egypt did not feel it.

💱 The trade dollar — this week the dollar was the whole story

Day three of tracking three numbers: the ounce, the yield, and the trade dollar (= gram price × 31.1035 ÷ ounce ÷ 0.875), plus the dollar pressure line from the Egyptian Exchange’s bulletin.

The two-way table — raw 21K per gram at each ounce and each dollar:

Ounce ↓ · Dollar →54.555.556.5
$3,950 (floor of today’s first scenario)6,0566,1676,278
$4,010 (the first dividing line)6,1486,2616,374
$4,025 (now)6,1716,2846,398
$4,060 (the second dividing line)6,2256,3396,453
$4,110 (ceiling of today’s scenarios)6,3016,4176,533

📍 Read it like this: our gram is 6,290 at an ounce of $4,025 and a dollar of 55.55 — roughly the 55.5 column. If the ounce fell to $3,950 and the dollar stayed put, the gram would be about 6,173. If the dollar rose to 56.5, the same fall in the ounce lifts the gram to 6,278. Raw metal before making charge, hallmarking and tax.

What is moving the market today

🎯 Our forecast for Friday’s close

Covering the Friday 23 October session — New York close and the weekly close · a scheduled-release day (five-year inflation expectations at 10:00 AM ET), so under correction four the condition is the release value plus the price close

40%Hot inflation expectations and the liquidation runs into the weekend → $3,950–$4,010
Inflation expectations come in above forecast, the December hike is cemented, and funds keep selling before the weekend. The widest box this week ($60) because liquidity days move at twice the usual size — the first application of yesterday’s lesson. Confirming number: five-year inflation expectations at 3.6% or above, with a close at $4,010 or below
35%The number as expected and gold circles in place → $4,010–$4,060
Michigan prints 3.5% as the market expects, no surprise, and gold closes the week near where it is after the selling calms. Confirming number: inflation expectations at exactly 3.5%, with a close between $4,010 and $4,060
25%A cool number and a bounce before the weekend → $4,060–$4,110
Inflation expectations fall, hike odds ease, and whoever sold this week buys some back before the break. Confirming number: five-year inflation expectations at 3.4% or below, with a close at $4,060 or above

🇪🇬 21K in Suez on Saturday morning — on three trade-dollar assumptions:
Steady at 55.55: EGP 6,173 – 6,423, most likely 6,173 – 6,267
Up one pound (56.55): EGP 6,284 – 6,538, most likely 6,284 – 6,379
Down one pound (54.55): EGP 6,062 – 6,307, most likely 6,062 – 6,154
With dollar pressure reading “outflow” all week, the first or the second — the third is remote.

✏️ The break is first for a fourth time, on the same logic: six down sessions out of seven, and the market is selling everything. What is new is that the lowest box is $60 instead of $50 — because yesterday the price left the box by $5. If the market bounces today, we got the order wrong and will say so in tomorrow’s table.

The lesson today — when you know the direction and get the size wrong

Yesterday we did everything right on paper: we said break, we named the reason (oil), we named the chain (liquidity). And we lost. Why? Because the box was $50 and the day moved $116. On the rate chain and the fear chain, a normal daily move is 1%, and our boxes are cut for that. On the liquidity chain the move is 2–3%, because the seller is not selling on a view of gold — he is selling because he needs cash, and he does not wait for a better price.

What does that mean in practice? That the box has to be cut for the chain, not for habit. From today: when the liquidity signature is showing (equities down, yield down, gold down), the first box widens to at least $60. We applied it today at once ($3,950–$4,010). If it holds up next week, it becomes correction six in the table.

And why count it wrong when the direction was right? Because the customer who read “$4,030–$4,080” and planned on it found $4,024. The $5 difference on the ounce is 8 pounds on the gram, nothing. But if the rule bends once because “the gap is small”, it bends the next day because “the gap is 10”, and then the record is an opinion, not a record. The record fell from 93% to 91% today; that is the price of the rule, and we are paying it.

And what this means for you: the ounce fell 2.8% in a day and your gram did not move by a single pound. If you were waiting for “gold to fall so I can buy cheaper”, the dollar said no. In Egypt, a fall in global gold reaches you only when the dollar allows it.

Today at 10:00 AM ET: inflation expectations at 3.6% or above means gold below $4,010. 3.5% means it circles in place. 3.4% or below means above $4,060. And at midnight: below $4,080 means the third weekly scenario, right by luck. And the gram answers to the dollar before the ounce.

Today and tomorrow, in Cairo time

Friday 3:45 PM: flash PMIs · 4:00 PM: the final Michigan survey with five-year inflation expectations (the number of the day) · 7:00 PM: the oil rig count · midnight: the weekly close and the verdict on the weekly call.
Saturday morning: the full weekly table (five days × range, order, number), the verdict, next week’s call with the trade dollar inside it, and proposed correction six (the liquidity box).
